Erling Haaland starts on the bench against Club America for Manchester City’s pre-season friendly, which kicks off at 8 p.m. in Texas (9 p.m. ET) at the NRG Stadium in Houston.

The Norwegian striker is expected to get his first minutes in the City sky-blue shirt, with coach Guardiola keen to get a first look at his physically imposing striker. This won’t of course be his competitive debut, with City’s first competitive outing against Liverpool in the Charity Shield on Saturday, July 30 (there is an ongoing debate as to whether the Community Shield is in fact just a glorified friendly, if that’s your view then City’s first real competitive match will be on 7 August in the Premier League, away to West Ham United)

City signed Haaland from RB Salzburg at the start of the summer, short circuiting what had been expected to be one of the major transfer battles of this market, with a number of clubs desperate for his signature.
