The wait is over: Harry Kane has joined Wayne Rooney as the top scorer of the England National Team with 53 goals. The Totteham Hotspur forward needed a lot fewer games to reach the record, reaching the tally in just 79 appearances for the Three Lions.

Wayne Rooney broke Sir Bobby Charton’s record of 49 goals in a 2-0 Euro 2016 qualifier win over Switzerland at Wembley in 2015. Seven years on, Kane has equalled the ex-Manchester United forward, scoring from the spot against France.

Kane’s first goal for England came just 79 seconds after he made his senior international debut in a match against Lithuania. The then-21-year-old made his debut under Roy Hodgson and started on the bench before coming on for Wayne Rooney and scoring a header from a Raheem Sterling cross shortly after.

The striker was the top scorer of the Russia World Cup 2018 with 6 goals, where he took his team to the semi-final stage, losing to Croatia. Romelu Lukaku was the closest challenger to his tally with 4 goals for Belgium.
