Has Jürgen Klopp just been handed his next dream job in top level management?
A World Cup exit triggers a dramatic change at the top, with the federation already moving quickly to secure its next coach.
Julian Nagelsmann has resigned as Germany head coach. The manager reversed his position just days after insisting, following Germany’s World Cup elimination to Paraguay in a penalty shootout, that he was “not someone who runs away.” The now-official decision brings his spell in charge of the four-time world champions to an end after the team’s disappointing tournament.
What did Nagelsmann say when resigning from Germany role?
The turnaround came after a meeting lasting nearly three hours on Thursday at the headquarters of the German Football Association (DFB) in Frankfurt. During the meeting, the federation’s senior officials listened to Nagelsmann’s explanation of Germany’s World Cup exit, although his arguments reportedly failed to convince those in charge.
“I’ve spent a great deal of time reflecting since our elimination and have spoken with people I trust, both personally and within the federation. This has not been an easy decision for me. My highest priority has always been the success of the team. After such a bitter disappointment, they deserve the opportunity for a fresh start. I want to thank my coaching staff, the support team, and everyone at the federation who stood behind us, especially the players, whom I had the privilege of working with. A special thank you also goes to the fans. You lifted us, believed in us, and gave us energy, even in the most difficult moments. It truly hurts that we let you down and couldn’t give you more memorable nights of football at this World Cup. You deserved so much more," the former Germany coach wrote in a letter.
Who will replace Nagelsmann?
Following that meeting, DFB officials informed Nagelsmann that it would be best for him to step aside and submit his resignation voluntarily. He ultimately agreed to leave, with the agreement reportedly including compensation estimated at around $8.2 million. The federation’s governing bodies were scheduled to be informed of the decision during a virtual meeting held on Friday.
The DFB has already confirmed that it is in talks with Jürgen Klopp to succeed him. “With regard to the appointment of a new head coach, the DFB leadership will now begin discussions with Jürgen Klopp. The coach has already indicated his willingness to take on the role.”
