Ten days before the 2023 Leagues Cup ends, the Executive President of Liga MX, Mikel Arriola spoke with TUDN about his impressions on this edition of the tournament. Arriola made it clear that he would ensure that more games will be played in Mexico for the 2024 edition as he wanted the competition to be staged on an “even footing” between both Liga MX and MLS teams.

As things stand heading into the quarterfinals, just two Mexican sides from the original 18 participants remain in contention (Queretaro and Monterrey). Arriola claimed: “I think the 2024 hosting is going to be determined in the analysis of sports venues. All our teams have played as visitors and we’ve heard from the fans on that matter and we’ve voiced our concerns over the officiating and use of VAR” he said.

The competition organization has been under scrutiny with a number of matches having to be canceled due to weather conditions; the Leon expedition was stranded in Canada and the players and staff slept at the airport and there is a genuine feeling among Liga MX fans that controversial refereeing decisions have constantly gone against the Mexican teams.
