FIFA statement on World Cup final brawl: Investigation into Spain-Argentina

The fallout from the ugly post-match scenes at the 2026 World Cup final continued on Monday, with FIFA announcing an investigation into clashes between Argentina and Spain.

Spain clinched a second World Cup triumph with a 1-0 victory over Argentina in extra-time. Immediately after the full-time whistle there were altercations between players, with Argentina duo Nahuel Molina and Leandro Paredes appearing to lash out at their opponents.

In a statement released on Monday, FIFA said: “Following an assessment of the relevant match reports for the FIFA World Cup final between Spain and Argentina, and in line with article 36 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code (FDC), the FIFA Disciplinary Committee has appointed a Disciplinary and Ethics Prosecutor to investigate potential breaches of the FDC with regard to the post-match incidents.”

Ill-discipline has marred the last week of a sensational World Cup run from Argentina, who were aiming to become the first team since Brazil in 1962 to retain the trophy.

Argentina players waved a flag reading ‘Las Malvinas son Argentinas’ / ‘The Malvinas are Argentinian’ after the semi-final win over England. This reference to a geopolitical dispute appeared to contravene FIFA’s rules on political messaging.

In the World Cup final a red card to midfielder Enzo Fernández tilted the game into Spain’s favor. Fernández had received a first yellow card earlier in the game for comments made to the referee; his second came after a late challenge on Spain defender Pau Cubarsí.

Argentine passions appeared to bubble over on the full-time whistle on Sunday, with altercations on the field in New Jersey. A FIFA investigation will now judge whether any punishments are required.
