LEAGUES CUP 2024

How important is Leagues Cup to Inter Miami’s Luis Suárez?

The Uruguayan striker spoke in the mixed zone after Inter Miami’s victory over Puebla, giving his thoughts on the competition.

One of Inter Miami’s standout players this season has been Luis Suárez, who arrived from Brazil to strengthen Gerardo Martino’s squad. On Saturday, he made his debut as a goal scorer in the 2024 Leagues Cup. After Las Garzas’ victory over Puebla at Chase Stadium, the Uruguayan forward spoke in the mixed zone.

Hard work needed to compete in Leagues Cup, says Suárez

Suárez’s first impression was about the tournament between MLS and Liga MX in general.

“You have to adapt to the system, the league, the regulations. This is the second year of this competition, but based on experience, Inter won it, so it was very important for the club. This second year we have to approach it the same way.

“With the mission to fight until the end, some people will like it, and others won’t,” the former Liverpool and Barcelona star continued. “Our duty is to work hard and play when the schedule tells us to.”

The next match for the Fort Lauderdale franchise will be on Saturday, August 3, against Tigres UANL in Houston, Texas.

“I think we are a team that, if we come out with the intensity we need, we always score a goal in the first few minutes,” Suárez said. “Today it was important to start by scoring, and it became difficult for them with the score against them. In the second half, we were able to seal it with a two-nil victory.”

Suárez on the level of Inter Miami

In response to Fernando Petrocelli, my colleague here at AS, regarding the level of Inter Miami, Suárez was clear.

“I think we need to make a complete evaluation of many aspects of the game, both defensive and offensive. I believe we need to take the positive things, the good things we have been doing. We are a team that improves with each match. Some of us missed games because of the Copa América, but the team managed to win important matches, which is crucial for consolidating our performance in this tournament and for the remainder of the league.”

Regarding the discomfort in his knee, El Pistolero said that he “had a tough week with some pain,” but that his body was telling him to be there to help the team.
