LALIGA SANTANDER

How LaLiga 2022/23 table would look with no VAR involvement

FC Barcelona, with club legend Xavi at the helm, secured the league title by beating rivals Espanyol, but would they be top dogs without video referees?

FC Barcelona, with club legend Xavi at the helm, secured the league title by beating rivals Espanyol, but would they be top dogs without video referees?
ALBERT GEAREUTERS

Barcelona has been declared the champions of LaLiga Santander after defeating Espanyol with four games still remaining. The team has secured an insurmountable lead over nearest rivals Real Madrid, with a 14-point advantage and only 12 points remaining to be contested. Los Blancos managed to reclaim second place with their victory over Getafe, while Atlético Madrid lost their match against Elche. As things stand, Getafe, Espanyol, and Elche occupy the relegation places.

Non-VAR LaLiga still in play

Interestingly, ceteris paribus, without the involvement of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR), the outcome of the LaLiga title would still be undecided at this point in the season. In the absence of VAR, Real Madrid and Barcelona would be tied on points at the top of the table. Opinions over unfair interference or justice served will likely come down to what colour of scarf you wear around your neck and how tightly it’s pulled.

LaLiga with and without VAR.

It also got involved to allow two goals that had been annulled for offside: in Zorrilla validating Papu Gómez’s goal and in the RCDE Stadium granting one for Puado.
