Alejandro Zendejas is in a rich vein of form for Club América, and after scoring two goals in Las Águilas’ win over Cruz Azul on Saturday, the United States international has now netted at least once against each of the club’s three chief domestic rivals.

Zendejas inspires come-from-behind victory

Zendejas has been one of the stand-out attackers in Mexican soccer for months now. Included in América’s starting line-up this weekend despite suffering a broken nose in the victory over Monterrey on matchday 14, the 25-year-old popped up when his team needed him against Cruz Azul.

Having seen his side fall behind to Uriel Antuna’s early strike at the Estadio Azteca, Zendejas levelled shortly before the break, then led the way as Fernando Ortiz’s men turned the scoreboard on its head. Zendejas’ equaliser was a pinpoint left-footed strike low into the corner - and so was the goal that saw him give América the lead soon after the restart.

América close in on spot in playoffs proper

Three points in the all-Mexico City Clásico Joven (the ‘Young Clásico’) took América up to second in the Clausura 2023 standings, and to within sight of direct qualification for the playoffs. With the top four finishers guaranteed a place in the postseason proper, the 13-time Mexican champions have a four-point advantage over fifth-placed León ahead of the final two matchdays.

Zendejas’ goals against Chivas, Pumas

Zendejas can also boast of having netted in the Clásico Capitolino against fellow capital-city club Pumas, and in the Clásico Nacional against arch rivals Chivas Guadalajara. Against Chivas, the Mexican-American scored his side’s second goal in a 2-1 win in the Apertura 2022 last September. After chesting the ball down in the box, Zendejas fired low into the net against his former employers.

Zendejas was also on target against Pumas in the Apertura 2022, in August. After producing a fine piece of skill to beat defender Nicolás Freire on the edge of the penalty area, he thrashed in a left-footed finish that rounded off a 3-0 thumping at the Estadio Olímpico Universitario.

Unbeaten against América’s major rivals

In all, Zendejas has appeared in eight games against one of Chivas, Pumas and Cruz Azul, and - as well as scoring four goals - he remains unbeaten against the trio of rivals. He has played his part in five wins and three draws.
