The Premier League has announced that bookmakers will no longer be allowed to be main shirt sponsors from the 2025-26 season. The league made the decision after discussions with clubs two weeks ago, although the new regulation will not be implemented to allow its members to complete their existing sponsorship deals with bookmakers.

Which clubs currently have shirt-front gambling sponsorship?

Of the 20 Premier League teams, no fewer than eight have bookmakers as their main shirt sponsor. Six (Bournemouth, Brentford, Everton, Leeds United, Southampton and West Ham United) are locked into long-term contracts, while Fulham and Newcastle United’s deals are due to end in summer. Clubs will be able to continue displaying such advertising on other parts of their kits, including on shirt sleeves, and also on advertising boards in stadiums.

Premier League statement

The full Premier League statement reads as follows:

“Premier League clubs have today collectively agreed to withdraw gambling sponsorship from the front of clubs’ matchday shirts, becoming the first sports league in the UK to take such a measure voluntarily in order to reduce gambling advertising.

The announcement follows an extensive consultation involving the League, its clubs and the Department for Culture, Media and Sport as part of the Government’s ongoing review of current gambling legislation.

The Premier League is also working with other sports on the development of a new code for responsible gambling sponsorship.

To assist clubs with their transition away from shirt-front gambling sponsorship, the collective agreement will begin at the end of the 2025/26 season.
