A victory over Columbus Crew on Wednesday night secured the Supporters’ Shield for Inter Miami, the first piece of MLS silverware in the club’s short history.

With the MLS Cup playoffs on the horizon, Lionel Messi will be hoping that the Supporters’ Shield is not the only trophy that he adds to his incredible collection this season.

The Inter Miami captain had a stellar career in European soccer before making the move to Miami last summer. Within weeks of his debut for the MLS club he had led them to their first piece of silverware, the Leagues Cup.

Who was the last team to win Supporters’ Shield and MLS Cup?

Last year’s MLS Cup winners, Columbus Crew, emerged from an inconsistent regular season to blitz the playoffs. Teams rarely manage to win both the Supporters’ Shield and MLS Cup. In fact, it’s only happened eight times in the 29-year history of the league.

The most recent team to achieve this double was LAFC, who picked up both in the 2022 season. Before that, Toronto FC managed a historic treble in 2017, winning the Supporters’ Shield, MLS Cup and the Canadian Championship, the first and only domestic treble in MLS history.

Messi, Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba were all involved in last year’s Leagues Cup triumph but 2024 addition Luis Suárez is yet to lift a trophy with the Herons. The Uruguayan has slipped from the pace in the Golden Boot standings but will be desperate to pick up more silverware in what could be his final season.

Suárez, and the rest of the illustrious former Barcelona quartet, enjoyed incredible careers at the top level of European soccer and won almost everything that the game has to offer. Now, they look to embellish their lofty reputations in a new continent.
