There is a spot in the quarterfinals on the line tonight from Mexico City as one of Liga MX’s most historic clubs host the Philadelphia Union in the second leg of the CONCACAF Champions Cup.

Club America

Los Aguiles met Honduran side CD Olimpia in the first round of the tournament and suffered a little more than people probably expected. Club America went to Honduras and came out with a 1-2 victory away from home with a stoppage time goal before half and a 88th minute goal from Ramon Juarez. A scoreless draw was enough to move “The Eagles” on to the next round.

Club America, along with Cruz Azul are the winningest clubs in this competitions tournament. They won their first title in 1977 and enjoyed quite a reign a decade later winning three Champions Cups in six years. They added another one to their trophy case in 2005, and had a back to back run in 2014/15 and 2015/16. Since then the closest they have been to taking the out right record with 8 titles was in 2021 when they were runners up.

It’s been a rough start to the Clausura for Club America. They are sitting in 7th with 17 points, nine behind leaders Cruz Azul with 26. Brian Rodriguez paces them in the league with 10 goals in the league and he is going to need to have to pick up the slack three of his fellow strikers injured coming into tonight.

Philadelphia Union

There was no such struggle for the Union in the first round of the CCC. They took on Defence Force FC from Trinidad & Tobago and eased past them to qualify for the round of 16. A 5-0 win away from home set up for a light days work back at Subaru Park and they put on a show in front of the home fans with a 7-0 drubbing of Defence.

Philadelphia are relative newbies in this competition. They have competed in the CCC three times, but never got past the semifinals. That was in their initial campaign in the CCC and they were knocked out by Cruz Azul.

The U are in the round of 16 but they have gotten off to a wretched start to the MLS season losing all four of their first four games. They have only scored two goals this MLS campaign but Cavan Sullivan, Bruno Damiani and Stas Korzeniowski all have two goal a piece.

First leg

The Mexicans took control of the tie in the first leg, walking out of Suburu Park with an 0-1 win. It was an early strike from Raphael Veiga in the 20th minute and Los Aguilas where able to hold down the fort for the rest of the way. Will it be as defensive tonight or will there be some fireworks before this knockout tie is over?
