Hugo Sánchez exposes Henry Martin: “I suggested he go to Europe and he didn’t”
The legendary Mexican striker theorized that if Martín didn’t seek to make the leap to Europe, it was because he already felt his physical condition had diminished.

The drama around Club América just won’t let up — and once again, it centers on one of their biggest goal scorers and current team captain. Henry Martín will miss yet another match, still dealing with lingering physical issues, and did not travel to Torreón for Saturday’s game against Santos Laguna. This will be his eighth straight match on the sidelines. His last appearance came back on February 20 in the visit to Puebla.
With frustration boiling over among América fans, the situation made its way onto ESPN’s Fútbol Picante. While discussing the 33‑year‑old striker’s ongoing struggles, Mexican legend Hugo Sánchez revealed a private conversation he once had with Martín.
Did Henry Martín ignore Hugo Sánchez’s advice?
On the show, the “Pentapichichi” dropped a revealing comment:
“I told Henry he should go to Europe. When the time came for him to renew with América, there was all this talk about which team he might join. That’s when it surprised me that he didn’t decide to leave for Europe. If he didn’t go, it may be because physically he already felt he wasn’t at 100 percent. And from that moment on, he’s had a certain inconsistency because his body hasn’t allowed him to perform.”

The truth is Martín has been dealing with major inconsistency for nearly two years. It’s become routine for him to miss André Jardine’s call‑ups due to various physical setbacks.
His scoring form has also dipped dramatically: in this Clausura 2026, he has only one assist, and he hasn’t scored since the second leg of the Clausura 2025 semifinal against Cruz Azul — almost 11 months ago.
