Barcelona eye title-clinching Clásico: biggest winning margin in LaLiga history explained
Barcelona could seal the title against Real Madrid and set a new LaLiga record in the process.

Real Madrid’s disappointing April continued at the weekend, with their draw away to Real Betis, coupled with Barcelona’s win over Getafe, leaving Álvaro Arbeloa’s side 11 points adrift of the Catalans at the top of the LaLiga table with only five games left to play.
As if it weren’t already, the league title now looks to be well and truly out of Madrid’s reach. Even if they were to win the final Clásico of the season on May 10, they would need Barça to suffer a catastrophic collapse, which looks completely unrealistic, and collect maximum points from their remaining fixtures.
Title slipping out of reach
On top of that, things could unravel further for Real Madrid. If Spain’s big two both win, or match each other’s results in any way, on Matchday 34 next weekend, Barcelona will have the opportunity to win the LaLiga title by defeating their biggest rivals in El Clásico.
If Barça win and Madrid drop points on Matchday 34, the championship will be decided before the teams meet, which would reopen the old guard of honor debate, something we have seen before in El Clásico.

A record within Barcelona’s sights?
There is even the possibility that Barcelona could break the record for the biggest winning margin in a LaLiga title race.
The Catalans are the current record holders, with Pep Guardiola’s Barça winning the 2012-13 championship by 15 points. That season, they amassed 100 points, as Madrid had done the previous year, comfortably reclaiming the trophy from their rivals, who finished on 85.
With five games still to play, including a Clásico at Spotify Camp Nou, Barcelona on a nine-match winning streak, and Real Madrid having dropped points in three of their last LaLiga fixtures, could Guardiola’s record be about to fall?
