U.S.A. vs Iran: The Lay of the Land

Now just one win away from a place in the knockout round of the 2022 FIFA World Cup, the U.S. Men’s National Team are in a good spot. On the other hand, it won’t be an easy time when they face Iran on Tuesday night in what will be the final game of Group B. Having drawn with both Wales and England in their two previous games, this is without doubt a must win situation for the Americans, but that’s also the case for Iran. Following a heavy loss to England in their first game, the Iranians revived their World Cup hopes with a dramatic win over Wales on Friday night. With political tensions intensifying off the field between the two nations, it’s hard to imagine that it won’t add to the heat on it. Kickoff is set for 2:00 p.m. ET at the Al Thumama Stadium in Doha, Qatar.

The Americans look to affirm themselves as elite

If you’ve been watching international soccer over the last two decades, it should be clear by now that the USMNT is one of the most improved sides of world soccer today. Bit by bit the Americans have established themselves as a side that should be taken seriously and most recently in their games against Wales and England that was again on show. Some may argue that they were unable to win either game, but rest assured, holding Wales and England, the fifth-ranked team in the world, without a goal from the run of play was no small feat. This of course brings us back to the present, where the U.S.A. must defeat Iran. If we’re honest, the Americans have been goal shy in this tournament so far which will be of concern, however, the fact that England scored six goals on the Iranians will likely give them courage. Surely the likes of Christian Pulisic, Gio Reyna, Timothy Weah, Weston McKennie and Haji Wright can conjure something up.

Iran on the cusp of lifting their country’s spirits

If you’re a fan of Team Melli, you’d have to be proud. Despite their heavy loss to England in the opening game of the group, the Iranians responded with a dominant performance against the Welsh where they had an incredible 21-10 advantage in shots, despite only possessing the ball for 38% of the match. What’s more, is that we could even say they were unlucky not to score more goals late in the match after they saw shots hit the woodwork and even had a goal disallowed for offsides. It’s also worth mentioning that both goals were scored by defenders on Friday, including a stunner from Rouzbeh Chesmi. Of course, leading the line for Iran on Tuesday night will be Sardar Azmoun. The Bayer Leverkusen player hit the post against Wales and currently sits at third on the nation’s all-time scoring list with 41 goals in 67 games. Indeed, Iran have 11 players with at least 45 caps, which is to say this is a team loaded with experience. This is not going to be an easy ride for the Americans.

U.S.A. vs Iran: The Prediction

Though we can definitely see that Iran are back on track, following their late win ove Wales on Friday, after they had been beaten 6-2 by England in their opener, the reality is this game is going to be tough. Team Melli now faces a USMNT that has shown it will be a handful for any team at the World Cup this year. Though they are yet to win a game, it’s clear that the Americans are a formidable opponent. With that in mind, we think they will prove to be too much for the Iranians though it will be close. A 2-0 win for the Americans is our prediction.
