He only spent one year in Marseille - on loan in the 2012/2013 season from QPR - but Marseille fans still have fond memories of Joey Barton. The ex-footballer and current Bristol Rovers coach watched the Champions League match between his former team and Tottenham in a rather peculiar way. Barton, who was attending the European game with his son, bumped into several Marseille fans in a pub near the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The former England player, wearing a Marseille ultras’ shirt (‘Virage Sud Marseille’), made his way to the stadium surrounded by fans and watched the match from the away stand, right in front of the Marseille ultras’ banner.

Spurs beat Marseille

During the match, the former Marseille player was seen taking pictures of his son with fans of the club. However, the victory went Tottenham’s way. The Bristol Rovers coach felt very much supported by the OM fans throughout the match, for which he wanted to thank them on social media. “Thanks to the fans of Olympique de Marseille. The best. Thanks to you, my son and I feel welcome. Always in my heart. Allez L’OM,” Barton wrote on his Instagram account, along with several videos and photos on the way to and inside the stadium.
