José Mourinho ban: Roma boss hit with four-game UEFA suspension
The Portuguese manager waited for referee Anthony Taylor in the car park after defeat in the Europa League final last month.
AS Roma head coach José Mourinho has been given a four-game touchline ban after confronting referee Anthony Taylor in the car park after the the Europa League final.
The Italian side were defeated on penalties by Sevilla, in a game that saw 13 players booked. The seven yellow cards for Roma was the most recorded in the final of the competition.
The former Chelsea, Real Madrid and Manchester United boss waited for Taylor in the car park and aimed a foul-mouthed tirade at the match official.
The 60-year-old called Taylor a “f*cking disgrace” and described his performance in the final as a “f*cking farce”. Mourinho’s rant, delivered in a mixture of English and Italian, was captured on camera and was immediately the subject of a UEFA investigation.
Mourinho was found guilty of “directing abusive language at a match official”, according to a statement from UEFA. His four-match suspension is double the minimum punishment for the offence.
Which games will Mourinho be suspended for?
The punishment was issued by UEFA, meaning that the suspension will only be applied in UEFA games. Roma’s sixth-placed finish in Serie A secured qualification for the Europa League once again, meaning that Mourinho is set to miss more than half of their group stage fixtures.
However Mourinho may not even be at the club next season and there is speculation that he will move on after two seasons in the Eternal City. He had previously been linked with the vacant managerial role at Paris Saint-Germain, but it now looks like Luis Enrique will take charge in the French capital.
Roma may be without Mourinho next season but they will still feel the affects of a UEFA punishment. They have been fined €55,000 and will not be able to sell tickets for the club’s next Europa League away fixture.
Fans were guilty of the “lighting of fireworks, throwing of objects, acts of damage and crowd disturbances”, according to a UEFA report.
