Jürgen Klopp is back in soccer management: how long is his contract with the German national team?

The public had been calling for it, and now the German Football Association (DFB) has made it official: Jürgen Klopp is the new head coach of Germany following Julian Nagelsmann’s resignation after the team’s disastrous World Cup campaign, which ended with a penalty shootout defeat to Paraguay in the Round of 32. Klopp, who had been serving as Red Bull’s Head of Global Soccer since leaving Liverpool in 2024, has signed a contract with the national team through 2030.

The appointment marks the first time the DFB has paid a multimillion-dollar compensation fee to secure a head coach, as Klopp was still under contract with Red Bull until 2029. However, CEO Oliver Mintzlaff did not stand in the way once the German federation made its approach. From the outset, Klopp’s priority was clear: to become Germany’s next head coach after winning virtually every major club honor, including the 2019 UEFA Champions League with Liverpool.

To revive the four-time World Cup champions, the DFB has handed Klopp the keys to the entire operation. He has been given full authority not only to appoint his own coaching staff, but also to implement whatever structural changes he believes are necessary to restore Germany to the top level of international soccer after three straight World Cups without reaching the Round of 16.

Klopp’s first game in charge will take place on September 24, when Germany faces the Netherlands in the UEFA Nations League.

He will be joined by Peter Krawietz, Pepijn Lijnders and Sven Bender as assistant coaches, forming a staff tasked with returning Germany to the elite of world soccer.
