Ibrahima Konaté’s future is suddenly wide open. The French center back could head into this summer’s World Cup without belonging to any club — at least if his current contract standoff keeps dragging on. The Liverpool defender, whose deal expires in June 2026, has become one of the most sought‑after players heading into the summer transfer window. Yet his next move remains anything but clear.

According to The Athletic, negotiations between Konaté and Liverpool have hit a standstill. Despite being linked to clubs like Real Madrid, Liverpool haven’t given up on locking him into a new long‑term deal and convincing him to stay in the Premier League. The Reds’ broader strategy is straightforward: keep the players they view as foundational pieces for the future.

Konaté, a Paris native who just turned 26, began contract talks with Liverpool in early 2024. The Athletic reports that several proposals have been discussed, but none have led to an agreement or a signature from either side.

Konaté wants to double his current salary

Part of the holdup may come from Konaté’s desire to take on a bigger role within the club — and to be compensated accordingly. He’s reportedly seeking a salary that reflects his importance in the squad (he currently earns around $108,300 per week). But with Liverpool yet to present a deal that meets those expectations, his options are narrowing as time passes.

The center back could choose to wait and see which top European clubs approach him once he’s eligible to negotiate freely. Still, Liverpool’s urgent need for defensive stability might push the club to accelerate talks to avoid another situation like the Trent Alexander‑Arnold contract saga. And during the recent international break, Konaté spoke positively about Liverpool, giving no indication that he’s preparing to walk away from Anfield.
