‘Las Vegas Whitecaps’? MLS responds as Vancouver faces shock relocation proposal
League meets with local leaders as investor bid threatens to move one of MLS’s Canadian clubs to Las Vegas.

The Vancouver Whitecaps saga just took another dramatic turn. A day after reports emerged that an investment group led by businessman Grant Gustavson had submitted a formal bid to purchase the club, new details suggest the proposal could relocate the team out of Canada entirely, with Las Vegas floated as its potential new home. Such a move would mark a seismic shift for one of MLS’s longstanding Canadian franchises.
A franchise at a crossroads
According to the proposal, the investment group is prepared to back the construction of a new stadium as part of the relocation plan.
But that vision clashes directly with the club’s stated preference to remain in Canada, where it has built its identity throughout its MLS history.
On the field, Vancouver has given its supporters plenty to believe in. The team currently sits second in the Western Conference, trailing only the San Jose Earthquakes, and still has a game in hand. The Whitecaps have also made headlines with the presence of Thomas Müller, who has emerged as the centerpiece of a project that, for now, appears focused on soccer rather than boardroom uncertainty.
MLS responds to relocation speculation
Major League Soccer addressed the situation in an official statement following news of the formal offer and the possibility of a move to Las Vegas, Nevada.
“Major League Soccer remains focused on working with the Whitecaps and local stakeholders to determine whether a sustainable long-term path for the club can be achieved,” the league said.

The statement also revealed that commissioner Don Garber recently met with key political and business leaders while in Vancouver for the FIFA Congress, including British Columbia Premier David Eby and Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim.
“Those conversations were constructive, and we appreciate the time and engagement from local leadership,” MLS said. “MLS and club representatives will continue discussions in the days ahead, and league leadership plans to return to Vancouver in the coming weeks for additional meetings.”
For now, the Whitecaps’ future remains uncertain, caught between a lucrative relocation proposal and a push to preserve the club’s place in Canadian soccer.
