Barcelona President Joan Laporta hit the headlines during the summer months as the Catalan club made some major acquisitions bringing in players such as Robert Lewandowski, Jules Kounde or Raphina with the club activating the now infamous ‘economic levers’ to ensure that the team maintained their budgetary restrictions as imposed by LaLiga.

Using these (palancas) ‘economic levers’ the club managed to sell some of their assets partially to raise money to reduce debt. Barcelona had earlier restructured their short-term debt to long-term by acquiring a loan of €600 million from Goldman Sachs.

German supermarket chain Lidl are planning their winter campaign and published a tweet making fun of Barcelona’s financial maneuvers this summer. Lidl’s promotion shows a set of levers and adds the line: “Get ready for the winter market Joan Laporta”.
