Amidst the significant transformations taking place at Inter Miami, involving the arrivals of Lionel Messi, Sergio Busquets, and Gerardo ‘Tata’ Martino, (more could come) it is intriguing to reflect on the position that The Herons find themselves in. Now, with new heroes almost in place, the franchise will commence its quest to reverse the situation for the remainder of the 2023 MLS season.

Currently occupying the final position in the Eastern Conference and third from the bottom in the overall MLS standings, Miami faces a challenging predicament.

The mission for Messi, Busquets and co.

With Messi and Busquets, along with Josef Martínez and DeAndre Yedlin, taking charge of orchestrating the operations on the field, the transformation required by this team becomes crucial. Currently, Inter Miami’s performance in the North American league has fallen short of expectations, leaving them nine points away from securing a playoff spot.

As you likely know, the MLS postseason format has undergone changes, with a Wild Card Round introduced for the eighth and ninth positions in each conference. This presents a viable opportunity for Messi and co. to gradually climb the ranks, with the Argentine expected to be presented to fans on Sunday 16 July.

What next for Inter Miami?

Looking ahead to Inter Miami’s upcoming fixtures, following the recent 2-2 tie with Columbus Crew, we see a match-up against DC United on 8 July, followed by a game against St. Louis City SC on 15 July. The new version of the Leagues Cup will commence with a match against Cruz Azul on Friday 21 July, which is also anticipated to mark Messi’s debut in the Fort Lauderdale-based team’s colours.

The team was made to work hard to get a point against Columbus and fans hope that the arrival of these new players has the desired immediate impact, with the aim of turning Miami’s postseason aspirations into a reality in Florida.

What games will Messi and Busquets play in MLS 2023?
