Lionel Messi injury scare: What happened to the Inter Miami captain?

Inter Miami captain Lionel Messi was substituted late on in his team’s final domestic game before the World Cup break.

Messi, now 38, was playing for the Herons against Philadelphia Union when he appeared to ask to be substituted with 20 minutes of the game remaining. he had looked sharp during his time on the field, setting up two of Miami’s goals.

The Argentine held the back of his leg, called over to the bench, and went straight down the tunnel after being substituted. The full extent of the fitness concern is not yet clear.

Is Lionel Messi injured?

No official statement has yet been issued, but the situation looked troublesome for the Miami veteran. Midway through the second half Messi pulled up, grabbing the back of his leg and walking over to the Miami bench.

He gestured to the coaches to ask for a substitution and immediately walked off down the tunnel. Inter Miami went on to win the game 6-4, a brace from Luis Suarez proving decisive in a chaotic match at Nu Stadium. Now, the team breaks for the World Cup. The condition of captain Lionel Messi is still unclear.
