Injuries only part of Liverpool’s problems

When the Champions League group stage draw took place at the end of last month, Liverpool were among the favourites to win the competition; but a 4-1 reverse to Napoli on Matchday 1 was a scolding reality check for Klopp’s team who now have a battle on their hands even to make it out of Group A and into the knockout round. It’s still early days of course, but Tuesday’s meeting with Ajax at Anfield is a game which Liverpool cannot afford to lose if they are to remain in the battle for one of the top two places in the section.

Liverpool’s season so far has been affected, on the one hand, by an overwhelming injury crisis. Whether that is down to preparation or the mental and physical cost of playing 63 games, every game possible in a relentless season, or perhaps a combination of the two, is anyone’s guess. But left-back Andy Robertson became the latest to fall victim to the Reds’ injury curse this week - he will be out until after the international break while he recovers from a knee injury. In the meantime, Konstas Tsimikas will step in. Liverpool’s walking wounded include: Naby Keita, Jordan Henderson, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Ibrahima Konaté, Calvin Ramsay, Curtis Jones and Caoimhin Kelleher.

Klopp will be aware that the team’s recent form is not entirely related to injuries. His side have conceded first in five of the seven games played so far - 10 goals conceded, almost double the goals let in, and half as many clean sheets than at the same stage last season. So something’s not right, and in a tournament as unforgiving as the Champions League, Liverpool have little room for error.

Ajax’s situation is the polar opposite. Alfred Schreuder’s team has yet to be beaten this season - they top the Eredivisie with six wins from six and also top their Champions League group on goal difference, after beating Rangers 4-0 on Matchday 1. And unlike Liverpool, they are also scoring freely - 21 goals in six games in the league, 25 goals in total. Steven Bergwijn has contributed eight of them but the team’s goals have come right the way through the squad - Mohammed Kudus is on five and Brian Bobbey and Kenneth Taylor are both on three. Schreuder has a full squad at his disposal so will be in the fortunate position of being able to field his strongest XI at Anfield. Ajax top Group A on three points, Liverpool are third with zero points.

Prediction: Liverpool 2-2 Ajax
