Liverpool vs Manchester City: match preview

Liverpool’s thumping midweek win over Rangers has left the Reds on the cusp of qualification for the Champions League last 16, but in the Premier League they’re lagging majorly. Defeat to Arsenal last weekend left the Reds 14 points adrift of the top, and six points off the top four.

The 3-2 reverse at the Emirates Stadium was Liverpool’s third straight league game without a win, and the Merseysiders must now attempt to arrest that negative sequence against a Manchester City team that remains unbeaten in the English top flight this term.

Liverpool did beat City in the Community Shield in July - their fourth game in a row without losing to Pep Guardiola’s men - but that victory comes with the caveat that the English football season’s curtain-raiser is essentially a glorified friendly. Jürgen Klopp’s side will also face a rather more in-form Erling Haaland; in his 12 City appearances since drawing a blank in an underwhelming debut at the King Power Stadium, the Norwegian has scored 20 goals.

City, who sealed their place in the Champions League knockout stages in a 0-0 draw against FC Copenhagen on Tuesday, go into Premier League matchday 11 trailing leaders Arsenal by one point. The Sky Blues have won their last three league games - including a 6-3 derby mauling of Manchester United - and have netted 13 goals in the process.
