Liverpool vs Manchester City: Community Shield preview

Liverpool - Manchester City live online: scores, stats and updates, Community Shield 2022

Premier League champions Manchester City face FA Cup holders Liverpool in the 100th edition of the FA Community Shield - a fixture both clubs know well.

Liverpool are 15-time winners of the Community Shield - previously known as the Charity Shield - while City have lifted the trophy on six occasions, most recently in a clash with the Reds. In 2019, Pep Guardiola’s men beat the Reds on penalties after a 1-1 draw at Wembley. Saturday will be only the second time the two teams have met in the Community Shield. It will also be the second time Leicester has staged the event; the old Filbert Street stadium hosted the 1971 Charity Shield, with Liverpool involved. The Merseysiders lost 1-0 to Leicester City, Steve Whitworth’s goal earning a surprise win for a Foxes side then in the second tier.

Both Liverpool and City have made key reinforcements to their squads since the end of last season. The Merseysiders lost Sadio Mané to Bayern Munich, with Divock Origi and Take Minamino also moving on. They have brought in three new recruits during the summer transfer window - most notably striker Darwin Núñez, who has joined from Benfica for an initial fee of about $75m. Midfielder Fabio Carvalho and right-back Calvin Ramsey have also arrived, moving to Anfield from Fulham and Aberdeen, respectively.

As for City, Erling Haaland was the major off-season recruit, the Norway centre-forward joining from Borussia Dortmund for around $75m. Guardiola also captured midfielder Kalvin Phillips and Argentine forward Julián Álvarez, and covered Zack Steffen’s departure to Middlesbrough by bringing in Stefan Ortega. Several players left the Etihad Stadium this summer - Raheem Sterling joined Chelsea, and Gabriel Jesus and Oleksandr Zinchenko also moved to the UK capital to join Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal. Unlike Liverpool, City are still active in the transfer market and hope to add Brighton’s attacking left-back Marc Cucurella.

Liverpool vs Manchester City: team news and injury updates

Klopp will be without both of his first choice goalkeepers. Alisson picked up an abdominal injury in the pre-season friendly against Manchester United in Bangkok, while reserve keeper Caoimhín Kelleher has also been unavailable throughout the summer. That offers an opportunity to Adrián San Miguel, who deputised for the injured Alisson in Liverpool’s 2019 UEFA Super Cup win over Chelsea. Another notable absentee is forward Diogo Jota, who has been struggling with a hamstring injury. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is ruled out but James Milner is available and will be hoping to show off his new hirsute look.

Meanwhile, City centre-back Aymeric Laporte is out of action until at least September after having an operation on his knee, but John Stones and Phil Foden, who didn’t go on the club’s US tour due to visa issues, are available.
