Liverpool 3-1 Manchester City summary: score, goals, highlights, Community Shield 2022

Darwin leads Liverpool evolution to see off City

Liverpool 3-1 Manchester City: as it happened

Liverpool 3-1 Manchester City: match summary

It was a day for the substitutes in Leicester as two new arrivals at Liverpool and Manchester City opened their accounts in official competition in the Community Shield, Darwin Núñez particularly giving his current employers plenty of reason to believe the €100m deal they agreed with Benfica is money well spent. The Uruguayan was introduced in the second half and scored late on after winning a penalty in a cameo that only promised great things but also ensured another gong in the Anfield trophy room. City, meanwhile, were left to dust themselves off and get ready for the real action in a week's time after being outplayed for most of a game that largely passed their star signing, Erling Haaland, by.

City's attacking method last season under Guardiola, which eschewed a number nine in favour of a fluid attacking line, looks like it will need considerably more work on the evidence of a fruitless afternoon in Leicester. Haaland had the ball in the net at one stage but the goal was ruled out as the ball had crossed the byline before being delivered to him. In the dying seconds, the big Norwegian had Liverpool's net at his mercy, only to hammer a shot against the bar. It was not the Haaland everyone has come to expect, and Kevin de Bruyne looked a little lost without his support scampering up the wings to either side, but it will not take long for Guardiola to iron out the wrinkles.

In good news for City, Julián Álvarez scored on his first official start for the club, and to his credit Haaland looked as happy for his new strike partner than the Uruguayan himself did. Guardiola will not linger long on missing out on a minor trophy with bigger fish to fry, but the City boss will have his notebook out tomorrow morning to analyze just how Liverpool were able to get the better of his side in such convincing fashion. Saturday was merely the opening bout of sparring and the Spaniard will be confident of having his combinations firing when the season proper begins.

Liverpool are 2022 Community Shield champions!

as.com
90+7

And there's the whistle! Liverpool run out 3-1 winners and win their 16th Community Shield to draw level with Arsenal in the all-time stakes.

as.com
90+6

Haaland! The Norwegian pounces on an Adrián parry and hammers a shot from a couple of metres out against the crossbar!

as.com

Salah sends a cross to the far side, Robertson nods it back across goal and Darwin pops up to guide it past Ederson for his first goal in a Liverpool shirt! And that's that now. A penalty provoked and a goal scored from the sub and Liverpool are a couple of minutes away from winning the Community Shield.

as.com

Gooooooooooooooooool! Darwin!

as.com
90+3

Nervous few seconds for Liverpool as Darwin rolls his ankle but the Uruguayan is ok to continue.

as.com
90+2

Haaland! The Norwegian has the ball in the net but it had clearly crossed the byline when Foden flicked it behind him. Chalked off and it hasn't been an afternoon to remember for the former Dortmund man.

as.com
90+1

City will fancy their chances of finding an equalizer in that space of time and they have a corner...

as.com
90

Seven minutes added!

as.com
89

Fabio Carvalho, a summer signing from Fulham, is on for his official debut as Luis Díaz makes way.

as.com
86

Decent chance for Darwin as he rises to meet Milner's cross but he glances his header wide.

as.com

Gooooooooooooooooool! Salah! The Egyptian hits it low and hard, perfectly placed just inside the post. Ederson guessed correctly but it was hit with such venom that the Brazilian couldn't get a glove to it.

as.com
81

Salah plucks the ball from the ref's hand and marches to the spot.

as.com
80

VAR having a look.... and penalty given!

as.com
79

Another penalty shout! Darwin is up to head the ball goalwards and it appeared to hit Dias on the hand...

as.com

City have upped their shot count considerably in the second half with 12 in total now with seven on target, to Liverpool's nine and two.

as.com
75

A reminder that there is no extra time in the Community Shield, so as it stands we'll be going to penalties in 15 minutes' time...

as.com
72

It's a lengthy check but it's given! Álvarez is off the mark for Manchester City and Guardiola's side are level at 1-1!

as.com

City goal disallowed! Foden pops up at the far post and forces Adrián into an uncomfortable save. Álvarez pops up to stab the ball in but the whistle goes for a possible offside. VAR having a look...

as.com
69

Penalty shout! Cancelo sends in a cross and it's cleared off the deck by a Liverpool defender, leading to City complaints, but ther ref is unmoved.

as.com
67

Ederson finds De Bruyne with a glorious ball from the back but the Belgian, who has been far from his best today, fails to find the run of Foden to his right.

as.com
63

Darwin! The Liverpool new boy is through again and probably should have done better there but fails to lift his shot over Ederson and hits the sprawling keeper in the face instead.

as.com
60

Darwin is straight into the action and flies into the area, where Ederson meets him and gets a glove to the ball before sending the Uruguayan flying.

as.com
58

Darwin is on for Liverpool as well now, Firmino heads off.

as.com
57

Movement on the touchline and Julián Álvarez and Phil Foden come on for City. Grealish and Mahrez make way.

as.com
55

Grealish's game summed up there. He does well to get past his man and get to the byline, then sends a cross straight to Matip to chest it back to Adrián.

as.com
53

Salah has been very lively on the right for Liverpool and most of the danger from Klopp's side has been generated there. His persistence tees TAA up for another pop but his left-footed effort hits a defender and spins harmlessly way.

as.com
49

Grealish has a little moan as Matip clips him from behind and City get a free kick but nothing more.

as.com
47

Mahrez! The Algerian forces another save from Adrián, who has been excellent between the Liverpool sticks, with Haaland looking for the rebound but not finding it.

as.com
46

We're back underway! It looks like there have been no changes at half time for either side. If we're not mistaken, both have six available today.

as.com

Fair to say Klopp will be the happier manager in the dressing rooms right now. Liverpool have looked dangerous on the break, solid in defence, comfortable in possession and have a one-goal lead.

Guardiola, meanwhile, has some issues to ponder. Haaland has been a bit isolated as City attempt to adjust to having a genuine number nine to aim for after playing the entire 2021-22 season with a variety of out-and-out strikerless formations that relied on movement and interplay.

as.com
45+2

And there's the whistle! The half ends with some decent chances at both ends but Liverpool 1-0 up as the sides head in for the break.

as.com
45+2

Another decent stop from Ederson as Salah sends in a cross-shot.

as.com
45

Two minutes added in Leicester.

as.com
44

Firmino, of all people, is there to get his head to it and clear.

as.com
43

City come again and Liverpool clear all too easily again. Klopp's defence have been solid so far and City have failed to create chances unless through an individual piece of skill from De Bruyne or Mahrez. They do have a corner though...

as.com
40

Grealish has drifted out of the game in the last 15-20 minutes and it will be no surprise if Guardiola makes a change on that side of the pitch. Haaland is snatching at balls now and a hefty control sees another half-chance go begging.

as.com
38

Mahrez! Another twist and turn from the winger after a De Bruyne ball but he chooses to shoot low and Adrián makes a comfortable save.

as.com
36

Great run from Cancelo, who drives down the left and manages to send in a decent cross, but Van Dijk hacks it clear in the sort of area where Haaland should have been attempting to get on the end of it.

as.com
33

Haaland! The Norwegian gets his first real sniff but Adrián is equal to the effort.

as.com
31

Big cheer from the Liverpool fans as Darwin warms up on the touchline.

as.com
30

Mahrez! There was no flag there and Liverpool had completely switched off as the Algerian strode through and forced a fine save from Adrián.

as.com
28

The game has started to acquire shape now, with periods of relative calm as the teams take stock, and a breather, punctuated by moments of blistering attacking intent. It may be a "title," but nobody wants to be getting injured here today.

as.com
24

De Bruyne! The City midfielder looks to answer immediately but pulls his shot into the side netting again after stealing into the area.

as.com

Fabino sprays the ball out wide and Salah taps it back to tee up the England fuall back, who picks his spot and fire into the corner. A slight switch-off from the City defence and Liverpool ruthlessly exploit it.

as.com
21

Gooooooooooooooooooool! Alexander-Arnold!

as.com
19

Ederson! What a read from the City keeper as he flies out to palm away a cross headed straight for the unmarked Díaz a couple of metres out.

as.com
17

Haaland has been fairly quiet so far with the efforts of Grealish and Mahrez to find the Norwegian so far coming to little effect.

as.com
14

Robertson! Liverpool's full backs combine as Alexander-Arnold sends a cross to the back post for the Scot, but his header is into the side netting.

as.com
11

Liverpool are so well-drilled that every time City recover the ball the red shirts drop back into two solid defensive blocks with two roving forwards, stymying every possible route to goal for Guardiola's side.

as.com
8

De Bruyne! And there is an opening for City as Bernardo Silva jumps on a defensive error and feeds the Belgian, who skips through a couple of challenges and fires just wide. Virgil van Dijk got a stud on that, otherwise Adrián would have been forced to make the save.

as.com
7

The game has settled into a fairly sedate ryhthm now with Liverpool looking to boss possession and City, for now, happy to sit and wait for a chance to break forward.

as.com
4

Salah! The Egyptian absolutely skins Cancelo and drives into the area only to fire into the side netting. Wonderful stuff from the Liverpool forward.

as.com
3

Luis Díaz! An early chance for the winger as Salah finds some space o the right and sticks in a decent cross with City guilty of a little ball-watching.

We're off! Liverpool get the ball rolling in the 2022 Community Shield!

as.com

The teams are out now and we're going to be treated to a rendition of God Save the Queen, which seems a bit much for what is a glorified friendly but there you go.

as.com

Just about 10 minutes in fact and we're going to go with 1-1, and then straight to penalties, which is a format a lot of competitions would benefit from.

Liverpool arriving at the stadium and that young lad in the foreground is clearly a Fantasy Premier League manager. Just eight million quid for Luis Díaz, who is also down as a midfielder and likely to be one of the bargains of the season.

Manchester City starting XI confirmed

Few surprises from Guardiola either as new boys Phillips and Álvarez start on the bench. Haaland is included of course, with Nathan Aké coming into the back four for the injured Laporte. Academy prospects Luke Mbete and Josh Wilson-Esbrand, both defenders, also get the call.

Liverpool starting XI confirmed

New signings Darwin Núñez and Carvalho have to make do with a spot on the bench this afternoon as Klopp fields what will likely be his starting XI when the Premier League season gets underway. With Allison out, Adrián gets a run-out between the sticks.

What is Manchester City’s possible lineup for today’s Community Shield vs Liverpool?

Pep Guardiola still hasn't finished in the transfer market yet. The City boss is still hopeful of tying up a deal for Brighton full back Marc Cucurella as a replacement for Zinchenko and there may still be departures. Today will be a chance to unleash Haaland, have a glance at his understudy this season, Julián Álvarez, and maybe test out new keeper Stefan Ortega and midfielder Kalvin Phillips. AS USA's Will Allen takes a look inside the mind of the Philosopher.

What is Liverpool possible starting lineup vs Man City for Community Shield today?

The Community Shield is often a decent way to gauge how the two competing sides intend to set out their stall for the season to come. New signings need to be integrated, new systems given a run-out, and new tactics deployed in what is in all likelihood going to be another two-horse Premier League race this season. Here's a look at how Liverpool might line up today courtesy of AS USA's Calum Roche.

Liverpool - Manchester City: head to head

Jürgen Klopp's side hold a pretty impressive historical advantage over City with 89 wins to 48, with 51 draws between the sides down the years.

City though hold an advantage on neutral ground, having beaten Liverpool in the 2016 League Cup final at Wembley and in the 2019 edition of this game. Both of those games ended 1-1 with City triumphant on penalties.

Today's match, like the 2019 Community Shield, will go straight to penalties if the scores are level after 90 minutes.

How many times has Erling Haaland scored in a debut game?

It will be no surprise if the prolific Norwegian forward gets off the mark today in his first official game for City: Haaland has proven himself the debut king throughout his career and he'll be relishing ther prospect of getting stuck into the Liverpool back four.

Liverpool vs Manchester City: team news and injury updates

Klopp will be without both of his first choice goalkeepers. Alisson picked up an abdominal injury in the pre-season friendly against Manchester United in Bangkok, while reserve keeper Caoimhín Kelleher has also been unavailable throughout the summer. That offers an opportunity to Adrián San Miguel, who deputised for the injured Alisson in Liverpool’s 2019 UEFA Super Cup win over Chelsea. Another notable absentee is forward Diogo Jota, who has been struggling with a hamstring injury. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is ruled out but James Milner is available and will be hoping to show off his new hirsute look.

Meanwhile, City centre-back Aymeric Laporte is out of action until at least September after having an operation on his knee, but John Stones and Phil Foden, who didn’t go on the club’s US tour due to visa issues, are available.

as.com

Haaland the big signing for City

As for City, Erling Haaland was the major off-season recruit, the Norway centre-forward joining from Borussia Dortmund for around $75m. Guardiola also captured midfielder Kalvin Phillips and Argentine forward Julián Álvarez, and covered Zack Steffen’s departure to Middlesbrough by bringing in Stefan Ortega.

Several players left the Etihad Stadium this summer - Raheem Sterling joined Chelsea, and Gabriel Jesus and Oleksandr Zinchenko also moved to the UK capital to join Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal. Unlike Liverpool, City are still active in the transfer market and hope to add Brighton’s attacking left-back Marc Cucurella.

Klopp's Liverpool shake-up

Both Liverpool and City have made key reinforcements to their squads since the end of last season. The Merseysiders lost Sadio Mané to Bayern Munich, with Divock Origi and Take Minamino also moving on. They have brought in three new recruits during the summer transfer window - most notably striker Darwin Núñez, who has joined from Benfica for an initial fee of about $75m. Midfielder Fabio Carvalho and right-back Calvin Ramsey have also arrived, moving to Anfield from Fulham and Aberdeen, respectively.

Today's game is the 100th edition of the FA Community Shield, a game that still takes place before the season itself starts and is contested by the winners of the previous season's league and FA Cup titles.

Liverpool are 15-times winners of the Community Shield- previouslyknown as the Charity Shield - while City have lifted the trophy on six occasions.

However, Saturday's game will be only the second time the two teams have met in the Community Shield.
