For many years, Paris Saint-Germain have dreamed about having Zinedine Zidane on board at Parc des Princes. In fact, Qatar contacted the Marseille-born coach on several occasions with a view to hiring him as their coach, only to always receive the same negative response. In an interview with Carré, his son, Luca Zidane acknowledged that seeing his father lead the Parisian team one day is very unlikely but left the door open to the possibility of him returning to his old club, Marseille.

Taboo subject

It’s not taboo to talk about my father joining OM (Olympique Marseille). It’s not something that we talk about it too much - I’m sure that he will make his own decision. Whatever happens, we will be happy. But seeing him at PSG is a little more complicated... (laughs),” explained Luca Zidane, who is currently Eibar’s first-choice goalkeeper in Spain’s second tier.

Since he stepped down from the Real Madrid coaching post in May 2021, Zizou has not coached any team - even though he has had no shortage of offers from some of Europe’s top clubs and further afield.

In the summer of 2022, just before hiring Christophe Galtier, Qatar made an effort to persuade the former Real Madrid coach to succeed Mauricio Pochettino on the PSG bench. The agreement between both parties was even taken for granted, but in the end Zidane declined the offer from the Qatari leaders. His dream, of taking the France job after the World Cup in Qatar, was dashed when Didier Deschamps decided to renew his contract with the French Football Federation until 2026.

Zidane has always been very selective when it comes to offers of employment. He was lured back to Real Madrid after stepping away from the job in 2018 but unlike other top coaches, he seems to have no desire to return to the world of high pressure management in football - unless there is some kind of emotional attachment...
