Inter Miami strengthened their status as Supporters’ Shield front-runners last weekend, beating FC Cincinnati 2-0 at Chase Stadium.

Both Miami goals came from Luis Suárez, the 37-year-old veteran enjoying an Indian summer in MLS. Suárez scored twice in the opening six minutes to put his team on course for the victory. His first, coming after just 24 seconds, was the fastest goal in club history.

If he keeps up his current form, Suárez will soon break another all-time Inter Miami record. His second goal on Saturday was his 14th league goal of the season, leaving him just two short of the 16 goals scored by Gonzalo Higuain in 2022.

With eight games left in the regular season Luis Suárez should easily break that record. He’s still in with a shout of the MLS Golden Boot, too, currently three goals behind Chicho Arango and Christian Benteke.

Luis Suárez’s competitive instinct key for Inter Miami

There is a real sense that this season represents Inter Miami’s best chance to challenge for MLS Cup in their current guise. The likes of Suárez, Lionel Messi and Sergio Busquets show understandable signs of aging and there is some doubt whether Suárez will even be able to continue after the current campaign.

Nevertheless, head coach Tata Martino is convinced that Suárez remains crucial to this Inter Miami team. Speaking to reporters after the Cincinnati win, Martino highlighted two key qualities that the Uruguayan brings to this team.

“What Luis gives us, in addition to his goals, which is most important, is his competitive spirit, his effort and dedication to the team, which he displayed once again.”

The MLS returns with a full slate of fixtures this weekend, Inter Miami having already secured their place in the playoffs. The Herons travel to Chicago Fire looking to continue their good form amid talk that Lionel Messi could soon make his return from injury. If Martino has Suárez and Messi in full fitness for the post-season, Inter Miami will take some stopping.
