Bruno Fernandes’ goal at Old Trafford on Sunday almost guarantees Manchester United Champions League football for next season.

Erik ten Hag’s side didn’t win any of their last three Premier League matches against Aston Villa but recorded an important 1-0 victory over Unai Emery’s in-form side to strengthen their grip on the top four in the Premier League.

Marcus Rashford had a fine chance when Fernandes played him in early on but World Cup winner Emi Martínez denied the England international.

United took the lead in the 39th minute when Fernandes scored after Villa keeper Martínez pushed away a Rashford shot.

Fernandes’ goal was given the green light after a VAR check and United went in ahead at the break.

Villa couldn’t find equaliser

As United looked for a second, midfielder Christian Eriksen dragged an effort wide. Rashford also went down claiming a penalty against Calum Chambers but the play was waved on.

Villa, who will feel they deserved something from the game, almost had their equaliser in the 81st minute.

Brazilian midfielder Douglas Luiz saw his shot blocked by Marcel Sabitzer, before defender Victor Lindelof headed his goalbound effort off the line.

United held on to collect all three points and move nine clear of Tottenham in fifth place.
