Manchester United break the market with bombshell Premier League transfer
The English press have revealed that Ruben Amorim’s Manchester United are set to spend big on an attacking talent.

Matheus Cunha’s move to Manchester United is set to be one of the first—and most significant—signings of the upcoming summer transfer window. According to journalist Fabrizio Romano, the deal is close.
“Manchester United are now closing in on Matheus Cunha deal! The Brazilian has accepted the project as agreement on personal terms is now being finalised, almost done. Final details to sort between all parties involved... and then, here we go.”
The 25-year-old former Atlético Madrid forward, now shining at Wolverhampton, would arrive at Old Trafford following an impressive season—one that marked a career resurgence. His signing would represent the first concrete response from the Manchester United board following a disastrous 2024–2025 campaign, which still includes a Europa League final against Tottenham. However, the transfer won’t come cheap.

Who is Matheus Cunha?
Cunha, who extended his contract with Wolves until 2029 earlier this year, has attracted interest from several Premier League clubs, including Arsenal, Newcastle, and Nottingham Forest. That hasn’t deterred Manchester United, who have long admired the versatile Brazilian. English media report that Cunha himself is eager to wear the United shirt. To make that dream a reality, the Red Devils will need to activate his £62 million release clause—just over $82 million. It’s a hefty fee, but one that reflects his growing stature.
With 15 goals in the Premier League this season, Cunha joins Roberto Firmino (2017–2018) and Gabriel Martinelli (2022–2023) as the highest-scoring Brazilian in a single English league campaign. Across all competitions, he has 17 goals and six assists in 34 appearances, with one league match still to play.
In a candid and somewhat controversial interview with The Guardian earlier this year, Cunha explained why he stayed at Wolves despite multiple offers: “I had a lot of offers, but I wouldn’t have felt right if I had taken them. Some things are out of your control, but I couldn’t leave the club mid-season, especially when we were in a difficult spot in the relegation zone.”
However, he also hinted at a summer exit: “I need to live a different life. Now we’re close to securing safety, but I’ve made it clear I need to take the next step. I want to fight for titles and achieve big things. I know I have the potential.”
On paper, Cunha appears to be a perfect fit for Ruben Amorim’s system, whether as a lone striker—he has 33 goals in 90 appearances for Wolves—or as a second forward alongside Bruno Fernandes. But with this current United side—who, regardless of the outcome at San Mamés, are on course for their worst-ever Premier League finish (16th with 39 points)—nothing is guaranteed.
What is certain, however, is that Cunha’s signing, once finalised, will not be Manchester United’s last. A crucial and likely turbulent summer awaits as the club looks to rebuild and return to form.
