Manchester United eye Real Madrid star Aurélien Tchouaméni as midfield shake-up looms

United are preparing for a major midfield rebuild this summer as key departures, including Casemiro’s, reshape their plans in the center of the pitch.

The summer transfer window in Europe is shaping up to be a busy one for midfielders. Several top clubs are already preparing moves to strengthen one of the most important areas on the pitch.

Manchester United are among them, and according to The Telegraph, they have identified Real Madrid midfielder Aurélien Tchouaméni as their top priority for a major squad rebuild.

While Real Madrid remain committed to the French international, who is under contract until 2028, United are exploring the possibility of a deal similar in ambition to their signing of Casemiro from Madrid a few years ago.

Casemiro is now expected to leave Old Trafford at the end of the season, accelerating United’s need for a proven replacement in defensive midfield. He will not be the only departure in that area either, with Manuel Ugarte also set to move on despite only recently arriving to fill a similar role.

Midfield overhaul at Old Trafford

As a result, midfield has become the clear focus of United’s recruitment plans. The club are expected to bring in at least two significant additions in the center of the pitch as they reshape the squad.

Tchouaméni, now 26, is viewed as a high-level option. Real Madrid paid around €80 million, roughly $94.3 million, to sign him from Monaco in 2022. While his market value has fluctuated since then, he remains highly regarded across Europe for his athleticism, defensive awareness, and ability to control tempo.

Expensive alternatives on the market

United are also considering other high-profile options, though none come cheap.

One is Elliot Anderson, Nottingham Forest’s rising midfield star and now a regular for England, with reports suggesting a price tag in the region of €120 million, over $140 million.

Other Premier League-based targets include Adam Wharton of Crystal Palace and Newcastle United’s Sandro Tonali. Both are considered elite prospects or established performers, but their availability would also require significant investment.

Real Madrid watching Premier League interest

With elite midfielders in short supply, competition is expected to be fierce. Premier League clubs are closely monitoring potential opportunities as Real Madrid, among others, weigh their own squad decisions.

United, in particular, are positioning themselves early as they look to capitalize on a shifting market and rebuild a midfield that has been at the center of their recent struggles.
