Things are not going well for Manchester United at the moment and no more so than for goalkeeper André Onana. The Cameroonian joined the Old Trafford outfit for an initial $54 million from Inter Milan in the summer but has struggled to meet expectations in his first few weeks at his new club, culminating in a crucial error in Wednesday’s Champions League group stage game at Bayern Munich at Allianz Arena.

Cameroon goalkeeper concedes all-important opening goal to Bayern attacker Sané

The Red Devils had been marginally the better team in the opening 25 minutes or so and only a crucial interception from Canadian international Alphonso Davies stopped Facundo Pellistri from opening the scoring. However, Onana fumbled Leroy Sané's fairly tame effort into his own net, a big moment in the context of a match in which the Bavarians would take two-goal leads on three separate occasions before going on to win 4-3.

But rather than hide or attempt to make excuses for his error, Onana, who has now conceded 14 goals in five matches, actively sought out a number of different broadcasters to take public responsibility for the role he played in his team’s loss in Germany.

Onana: “We didn’t win today because of me”

His interviews followed a similar pattern, with the former Barcelona academy player tellng UK-based broadcaster TNT Sports the following:

“After my mistake, we lost control of the game. I’m the one who let the team down. The team was very good. I think because of me we didn’t win this game. We have to move on and this is the life of a goalkeeper. We didn’t win today because of me”.

“I have a lot to prove. My start at Manchester United is not so good, not how I want. Today was one of my worst games. It is difficult. We are a very big club and want to win everything. It was a big opportunity for us to bounce back. It’s tough. We have to be together and work hard”.
