Barcelona will be without Marc Bernal on Wednesday for the first leg of their Champions League quarter final against Atlético Madrid. The young midfielder has suffered a Grade 1 ankle sprain — a minor injury, but one that will keep him sidelined for seven to ten days. That timeline also puts his availability for Saturday’s derby in serious doubt.

The silver lining? The sprain is mild, and the club expects Bernal to return quickly. In fact, barring setbacks, he’s already projected to be available for the second leg against Atlético.

Midfield headache

Still, the injury creates a major selection headache for Hansi Flick. With Frenkie de Jong still out and not expected back in time for Wednesday, the German manager must decide who partners Pedri in the defensive midfield role. All signs point to the versatile Eric García stepping in again.

There is good news on another front: Ronald Araújo will be available. Tests ruled out a muscle tear and confirmed only a minor overload in his left hamstring, meaning he should be fit for Wednesday’s Champions League clash.
