Marcos Llorente makes history at Anfield
He scored at Liverpool’s stadium and is the player who has scored the most goals against Liverpool there in the Champions League.
Marcos Llorente maintains his love affair with Liverpool’s stadium. Anfield is a special place for the versatile Atlético player, and he found the net there once again. His goal made it 0-1 and made him the player to have scored the most goals against Liverpool at Anfield in the top continental club competition: Llorente has five, ahead of Benzema on four and Dembélé on three.
The Atlético player scored twice on March 11, 2020, in the legendary tie in which Simeone’s side knocked out the reigning European champions. Llorente scored a brace before Morata added a third as Atlético completed a remarkable comeback. Last season, Atlético returned to Anfield for their opening Champions League fixture, and the Madrid native scored twice again, although the rojiblancos ultimately lost 3-2.
Llorente has now scored 10 goals in the Champions League, five of them at Liverpool’s stadium. What he has with Anfield is a genuine love affair. This time, he struck in the 18th minute after an exceptional pass from Julián Álvarez. Llorente found himself one-on-one with Liverpool goalkeeper and calmly slotted the ball low past him.
The Madrid native started at right wing-back with a clear attacking vocation, and once again made his mark at a stadium where he has repeatedly produced decisive moments. Atlético could not take anything from the game, but Llorente left his mark on Anfield yet again and added another chapter to his remarkable record there.
