Lothar Matthäus, now working as a television commentator for Sky Sport Germany never misses the opportunity to give his opinion on Bayern. As a Bavarian legend, he knows the ins and outs of the Munich club better than most. “I can understand Julián Nagelsmann’s decision and, of course, it is another setback for Bayern after Xabi Alonso’s ‘No’”, said Matthäus, who was open about who he feels would be the ideal coach for Bayern.

The Germans are on the lookout or a new coach to replace Thomas Tüchel, who will be departing at the end of the season.

Emery would be perfect for Bayern

Unai Emery has been working wonders at Aston Villa. Saturday’s 3-1 win against Bournemouth strengthens the team’s position in fourth position in the Premier League. The midlanders are also in the Europa Conference League semi-finals and are well positioned to make their return to the Champions League for the first time since 1982-3.

For Matthäus, he’s the ideal choice to lead Bayern: “I would take Unai Emery from Aston Villa. He’s doing a great job there. He has a lot of experience at international level and has won titles with Sevilla, for example. If you speak English, you can learn German, but now all the players speak English anyway, so I don’t see any problems with the language barrier. Emery would also bring a breath of fresh air, he would be a new face in the Bundesliga and that would fit well with Bayern Munich,” stated the former Bayern and Inter Milan midfielder.

The television pundit also puts Hansi Flick in the spotlight, although he rules out his return to the Allianz Arena: “As far as I know, Hansi Flick will no longer work in the Bundesliga,” he explained. “He is more focused on working abroad.”

So Bayern’s search for a new coach continues. After doing their best to lure Nagelsmann back, the sports department is now working on other names and Emery is on the list along with Roberto De Zerbi, Sebastian Hoeness, Peter Bozs, Arne Slot...

With Villa one step closer to qualifying for next season’s Champions League, and the planets seemingly perfectly aligned in Birmingham, it won’t be a simple task to persuade Emery to quit the post he accepted in October 2022. Nor does the Basque coach want to enter into speculation, telling reporters: “I am focused here (at Aston Villa) 100 percent“.
