Mbappé gets Champions League consolation prize as PSG win second straight title

Kylian Mbappé also ended the campaign empty-handed when it came to team silverware, although individually, the French superstar still enjoyed another outstanding year. Despite watching former club PSG win back-to-back Champions League titles since his departure, Mbappé finished this season’s competition as its leading scorer.

His 15 goals were enough to secure the 2026 Champions League Golden Boot. It mirrors his achievement in Spain, where Barcelona lifted the LaLiga title while Mbappé finished as the league’s top scorer with 25 goals.

It is the second consecutive season that the French forward has claimed the domestic scoring crown.

Messi, Ronaldo... Mbappé

This is not the first time the France captain has finished a Champions League campaign as the tournament’s leading scorer.

He also earned the honor in 2024 while playing for Paris Saint-Germain. It may be a small consolation given Real Madrid’s disappointing season, but it keeps him in the conversation with two of the competition’s greatest icons.

For the better part of 15 years, Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi dominated the Champions League’s individual scoring awards. Ronaldo finished as the tournament’s top scorer seven times, while Messi achieved the feat six times.

Now Mbappé is beginning to build a similar résumé. Yet one major accomplishment continues to elude him: winning the Champions League itself.

Mbappé targets World Cup record

A new opportunity for individual glory could arrive at the upcoming World Cup.

Mbappé already won the tournament’s Golden Boot in 2022, when he led France to the final. No player in history has finished as the top scorer at two different World Cups.

That is another milestone within reach for the Real Madrid forward as he looks to add individual honors while continuing his pursuit of the biggest team trophies in the game.
