Mbappé stuck in his first real crisis at Madrid — ahead of season-defining tie in Munich

April is a month full of doubts — and the Bernabéu made that clear when it turned on Girona. This season hasn’t offered many feel‑good surprises, and even the player who once felt untouchable is now under the microscope. Kylian Mbappé, the man who chased Cristiano Ronaldo’s records and even matched his 59 goals in a calendar year, suddenly looks like he’s searching for himself.

He opened the season with 38 goals in his first 31 matches. Now? A full‑blown scoring blackout. The vibes are debatable, but the numbers aren’t: one goal in his last seven games. He went from scoring once every 70 minutes… to once every 497 minutes. With NASA’s Artemis II prepping for orbit, it’s Mbappé who’s trying to solve the real mystery.

No need to panic says the coach

Arbeloa isn’t panicking — far from it. Asked about the slump affecting both Mbappé and Vinícius, he treated them like the superstars they are: “I can’t worry about two players who put up the numbers they do. They’re two of the four or five best players in the world.”

But he didn’t make it about individuals. He made it about the team: “We need to improve collectively, especially against teams that sit deep, give us no space, and barely press. Hopefully on Wednesday this streak ends, like all streaks do, and we’re sharper in front of goal.”

And that last part — the finishing — is exactly where Mbappé’s story sits right now.

A brand new situation for Mbappé

For a player with 83 goals in 96 games for Real Madrid, this is uncharted territory. He’s never gone seven matches with just one goal in a Madrid shirt.

And it’s not for lack of trying.

During his blistering start, Mbappé took 156 shots in 31 games, averaging 4.1 attempts ending in the back of the net — nearly a 25% conversion rate. Since February 17, when the drought began against Benfica, he’s taken 25 shots for just one goal (the first‑leg strike vs. Bayern). Zero goals against Benfica, Osasuna, Manchester City (in 21 minutes), Atlético (26 minutes), Mallorca, and Girona.

From a 25% conversion rate… to 4%. As Florentino Pérez might say: that’s not the Mbappé we know.

The knee, the break… and the questions

The knee scare didn’t help. After his disallowed goal against Osasuna, he stepped aside and flew to Paris for a second medical opinion. The diagnosis matched Madrid’s, but the pause cost him rhythm: five games out, then a slow reintroduction against City and Atlético.

He worked through the international break — and actually thrived. He scored against Brazil and returned to Madrid feeling physically sharp.

But while he was out, the team took off. Aside from a painful loss to Getafe, Madrid rattled off six wins, including a five‑game streak (Celta, Elche, Atlético, and the City knockout tie) that showcased their best soccer of the spring.

Then Mbappé returned to the starting lineup… and the momentum stalled. Losses to Mallorca and Bayern at the Bernabéu. A frustrating draw with Girona that poured salt on the wound instead of easing it.

Heading to Munich with fire in his eyes

Mbappé travels to Allianz Arena with literal and figurative fire in his eyes. The penalty he didn’t get in the first leg sparked outrage across Madrid. Arbeloa didn’t mince words: “It’s a penalty here and on the moon.”

But beyond the controversy, Mbappé knows what’s at stake. These are the moments he’s always wanted — the ones that bring him closer to the trophy he’s never lifted: the Champions League.

And now, in the worst scoring stretch of his Madrid career, he needs to raise his voice on the biggest stage.

Turn frustration into celebration. Make the MVP conversation about him, not Manuel Neuer. Prove he’s still the shortcut to glory.

Because in Munich, there are only two outcomes: glory or the abyss. And the fastest route to glory still runs through Kylian Mbappé.
