Mbappé’s key role in Real Madrid’s imminent move for Konaté
France international Konaté is available on a free transfer, while Real Madrid also looks to its academy for defensive reinforcements.
Real Madrid already recognizes what has become increasingly obvious over the past two seasons: rebuilding its defense is now a top priority.
A relentless run of injuries has taken a heavy toll on the back line. Dani Carvajal has already said goodbye to the Santiago Bernabéu after a campaign disrupted by the aftermath of serious knee injuries. Éder Militão is expected to miss the next four to five months, Antonio Rüdiger continues to manage a long-term knee issue despite being set for a one-year contract extension, David Alaba has already left the club after failing to recover from a devastating ACL injury, and Ferland Mendy’s latest setback could sideline him for much of next season.
The result is a defensive unit in urgent need of reinforcement. One signing will not be enough. Club officials are targeting at least two, and possibly three, additions at the back. That objective is reportedly shared by José Mourinho, who would take charge if Florentino Pérez is reelected president on Sunday.
Konaté moves into focus
Against that backdrop, Ibrahima Konaté has emerged as a leading target.
According to reports, Pérez is close to securing the French center back’s signature should he win reelection, with the proposed deal consisting of a four-year contract plus an additional option year.
Now 27, Konaté has parted ways with Liverpool after repeatedly turning down the club’s attempts to negotiate a new contract. Raised in Paris’ 13th arrondissement, the France international is not known for flashy play, but he brings imposing physical attributes. At 6-foot-4 and approximately 209 pounds, he profiles as the kind of powerful defender who draws comparisons to Rüdiger.
Konaté is a regular starter for France and also shares a close friendship with Kylian Mbappé. In informal conversations with club executives, Mbappé has reportedly indicated that he views Konaté as a strong addition for Madrid’s next sporting project.
The defender may even have hinted at his future plans in his farewell message to Liverpool.
“From the bottom of my heart, thank you for everything. This is not an easy goodbye, but it is time for a new challenge and a new chapter.”
Election backdrop adds urgency
That “new challenge” has become part of the discussion surrounding Real Madrid’s presidential election.
Both candidates understand they have until Saturday to convince club members that they can build a squad capable of ending a two-year trophy drought.
Konaté may not be viewed as one of the world’s elite center backs, but his physical profile makes him particularly appealing to coaches such as Mourinho. Throughout his career, the Portuguese manager has favored defenders capable of dominating individual duels and imposing themselves physically.
Why the deal makes sense
One of the biggest attractions is Konaté’s contract situation.
Because he is available as a free agent, Madrid would only need to negotiate personal terms and a signing bonus. There would be no transfer fee to discuss with a selling club.
The strategy has become increasingly familiar at the Bernabéu. Madrid previously used it to sign players such as Alaba and Rüdiger, while also landing Trent Alexander-Arnold, although the club reportedly paid Liverpool around €10 million ($11.65 million) to allow him to participate in the Club World Cup. Mbappé’s arrival followed a similar path.
The fact that Mbappé reportedly supports the move only strengthens Konaté’s position. He would join an established French contingent at Valdebebas that already includes Mbappé, Eduardo Camavinga and Mendy.
Competition remains fierce, however. Konaté is also attracting interest from Bayern Munich, Paris Saint-Germain and several Premier League heavyweights. His performances at the upcoming World Cup with Didier Deschamps’ France squad could further boost his value.
That possibility is one reason Madrid’s decision-makers are pushing to complete a deal while the opportunity remains within reach.
Real Madrid’s next generation of defenders
External signings are only part of the plan.
Madrid also intends to lean on its academy system to strengthen the position over the coming years. While the club pursues experienced additions such as Konaté, several highly rated prospects are progressing through the ranks.
Raúl Asencio is already established with the first team. The Canary Islands native is under contract through 2031 and is expected to begin preseason under Mourinho if Pérez wins reelection.
There is also considerable excitement surrounding 18-year-old Joan Martínez. Regarded as one of the academy’s brightest prospects, he recently helped Madrid win the UEFA Youth League and started in Castilla’s 2-0 victory over Sabadell in the promotion playoffs.
Lamini Fati, 20, is another name to watch. The Madrid-born defender developed at Leganés before joining Real Madrid in 2025 for a reported €100,000 ($116,500) fee. Strong, aggressive and comfortable playing out from the back, he also started against Sabadell and was among Castilla’s standout performers under the watchful eye of Pérez, who attended the match at the Alfredo Di Stéfano Stadium.
Add 19-year-old Víctor Valdepeñas, known as “Valde,” who has already made his first-team debut, and fellow 19-year-old Diego Aguado, who has also received opportunities with the senior squad.
For all the attention on transfer targets, Real Madrid believes some of its future defensive solutions may already be at home in Valdebebas.
