Megan Rapinoe talks about equal pay after USWNT win over Haiti

Megan Rapinoe turns 37-years-old on 5 July and her celebration came one day early because on Monday she came in as a substitute in the United States 3-0 win over Haiti in the CONCACAF W opener. The two-time World Cup winner earned her 190th cap with the USWNT when she entered in the 75th minute.

USWNT on equal pay

After the match Rapinoe talked to journalists in the mixed zone of the Estadio Universitario in Monterrey, Mexico and she talked about equal pay with a big smile on her face. “They [US Soccer] will pay us better after today’s game.” This is the first major tournament for the USWNT since the US Soccer Federation announced a collective bargaining agreement on 18 May.

“We are very proud of what we have achieved and to be playing under this new contract. I think the US Soccer Federation feels the same way because the fight is over. Yes, we joke around the money but it is a way for society to show our worth,” added Rapinoe.

“We are an example for the future generations and the sport all over the world. We [USWNT] are very proud of our achievement because it took a lot of work and dedication. It is amazing,” concluded Rapinoe.

At the end of the game Megan Rapinoe was given a jersey of the Tigre’s women’s team by the head coach of the Monterrey-based team. The Felines are the club with the most titles in women’s soccer in Mexico and the USWNT player left the stadium wearing that Jersey.
