Mexicans are excited by the World Cup — but don’t feel they can afford to attend, survey shows
A survey by Animal Político reveals that fans are proud that their country is hosting the tournament, but they see it as inaccessible.

The 2026 World Cup is getting closer. For the third time in history, Mexico will host the tournament — though this edition will look very different from 1970 and 1986, as the country shares hosting duties with the United States and Canada. Even so, excitement across Mexico is high. But according to a new survey from Animal Político, many fans feel the event is financially out of reach, whether for stadium tickets or Fan Fest events.
Mexico will host 13 of the tournament’s 104 matches. Despite the relatively small number, Mexican fans remain enthusiastic and proud. The survey — conducted with QuestionPro and Good Humans — found that 63% of respondents say they have “a lot” or “quite a bit” of interest in soccer. Among that group, 75% have a positive opinion of the World Cup, and 85% feel proud that Mexico is once again a host nation.
But that enthusiasm clashes with reality: most fans don’t think they’ll be able to attend anything in person. High ticket prices are the main barrier, and responses of “not very likely” or “not likely at all” dominated when people were asked how probable it was they would attend a match or visit a Fan Fest.

A World Cup watched from home
As a result, most Mexicans expect to experience the 2026 World Cup from a distance. A large majority plan to watch matches at home, and 79% say they’ll follow the tournament through family gatherings or watch‑parties with friends. In other words, the World Cup becomes the perfect excuse for social get‑togethers.
Economic impact and spending plans
Another revealing finding: 85% of respondents believe Mexico will see major economic benefits from hosting the World Cup.
When asked what they expect to spend money on during the tournament:
- 26% plan to buy snacks and drinks for watching matches
- 16% expect to purchase jerseys or merchandise
- 15% will spend on food delivery
- 11% plan to go to bars or restaurants to watch games
What worries Mexicans about the 2026 World Cup?
The survey also asked about concerns related to the event. Three issues stand out:
- 49% – Public safety
- 43% – Economic impact and associated costs
- 40% – Mobility and traffic in host cities
Key survey findings
- 63% have a strong or significant interest in soccer
- 75% have a positive opinion of the 2026 World Cup
- 85% feel proud that Mexico is hosting again
- 84% believe the tournament will generate strong economic benefits
- 79% plan to watch matches at home with family and friends
