LEAGUES CUP

Monterrey and Querétaro, the only Liga MX teams left in the Leagues Cup

Following the elimination of América and Toluca, only two Mexican teams remain alive in the tournament at the quarter final stage.

Ciudad de México

The Liga MX is fast running out of representatives in the Leagues Cup. On Tuesday, Toluca and América bowed out of the competition within minutes of each other - both crashing out on penalties. Los Diablos managed to turn their game against Minnesota around after going 0-2 down, while América drew their game against Nashville by the same score, not without some controversy.

Only one Mexican team could emerge from Clásico Regio - Tigres or Monterrey. In the end it turned out to be a dream debut for new signing Sergio Canales, who scored a stoppage time winner from the spot to put Rayados through to the next round and send the Clausura 2023 champions out of the Leagues Cup.

The other team left flying the flag for Mexico at the Leagues Cup is Querétaro. Their rival will be the Philadelphia Union, a team that has scraped through to the quarter finals after two draws (0-0 and 1-1) but have been strong on penalties. The winner of that game will face the winners of Dallas vs. Inter Miami, so potentially a meeting with Messi in the semis.

Completing the quarter finals are LAFC vs. Monterrey and Nashville vs. Minnesota. The Rayados and Gallos could only face each other in a hypothetical final. All of the quarter final matches will be played on Friday and Saturday.
