Real Madrid’s presidential election is putting several potential transfer deals on hold, including one of the club’s top priorities: finding Dani Carvajal’s successor at right back.

The leading candidate appears to be Inter Milan’s Denzel Dumfries. The Dutch international, who recently turned 30, is highly regarded within the club for his experience, versatility and attractive price tag. Tottenham Hotspur’s Pedro Porro has also been linked with the position, but he would be significantly more expensive and far more difficult to sign.

Mourinho gives the green light

Inter’s starting right back reportedly has a $25 million ($29 million) release clause, a remarkably affordable fee for a regular starter at one of Europe’s biggest clubs and a key player for the Netherlands national team.

According to information obtained by AS, Mourinho has been presented with Dumfries as a potential signing and has approved the move. The veteran coach knows the player well from years of following Europe’s top competitions and is said to value the progress Dumfries has made defensively in Serie A, one of the world’s most tactically demanding leagues.

Those familiar with the player also speak highly of his professionalism and ability to adapt to different tactical demands.

A different kind of Real Madrid signing

Dumfries would arrive with the difficult task of filling the void left by Carvajal, one of the most influential right backs in Real Madrid history.

While the Dutchman does not fit the profile of some of Madrid’s recent signings, the move would align with Mourinho’s reported preference for players capable of making an immediate impact rather than prospects viewed primarily as long-term investments.

Election result could decide the deal

Any potential move, however, remains tied to Sunday’s presidential election.

Whoever emerges victorious will ultimately have the final say on whether Real Madrid moves forward with a deal for Dumfries. Reports in Italy suggest the Inter defender would be open to leaving the San Siro if the opportunity to join Real Madrid becomes a reality.
