New blow for Real Madrid: Militão to miss the rest of the season
The Brazilian central defender suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee and will be out for about nine months.
The worst news was confirmed for Eder Militão on Sunday. The Real Madrid central defender for has torn the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee and says goodbye to practically the entire season. The estimated recovery time will be at least nine months.
The Brazilian was injured early in the second half of Saturday’s league opener against Athletic Club at San Mamés. In an apparently inconsequential action in the three-quarter zone in his own half, Militão’s knee got caught as he was battling for a ball with Sancet. The player quickly realized the gravity of the injury and left the pitch in tears.
For Real Madrid, Militão’s knee injury is the third serious setback in a week. On Thursday, goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois suffered an almost identical ACL injury during training at Real Madrid City, which will rule him out for the rest of the season. And on the same day, it was confirmed that summer signing Arda Güler will undergo surgery to sort out an ongoing meniscus problem.
In the case of Militão, Real Madrid has until the transfer deadline at the end of August to sign another centre-back. In principle, the club is not expected to make any moves, as Ancelotti has Alaba, Rüdiger and Nacho to cover the center-back positions and could call on players from Castilla in a case of extreme urgency.
