New contract gives Real Madrid defensive boost

As Real Madrid’s attentions turn to the 2026/27 season, Los Blancos have secured the future of a defensive stalwart.

Update:

Antonio Rüdiger has agreed a new Real Madrid deal that will keep him at the club for at least one more season. The center back, 33, had been pushing for a two-year renewal; however, he ultimately accepted the club’s policy of limiting veteran players to 12-month extensions.

Back to fitness after injury-hit year

Rüdiger endured a difficult campaign, largely due to the physical issues he had been carrying for some time - problems that eventually required surgery. A treatment plan initiated after a trip to London, which included a specialist consultation, has finally put an end to the pain that forced him to compete at less than full strength for months.

Those issues now appear firmly behind him, as he has demonstrated in the closing matches of the current season.

The German arrived at Madrid in summer 2022, and while it took him some time to lock down a regular starting role, he gradually became indispensable to then-boss Carlo Ancelotti’s plans. Hip and knee issues repeatedly pushed him to the limit, particularly in the latter stages of last season, when his commitment to the Italian coach and the club effectively led him to play through injury.

In recent years, Rüdiger has received several offers - most notably a lucrative proposal from Saudi Arabia - but has chosen to remain loyal to Madrid. He believes he still has unfinished business wearing the famous white shirt.

Who are Real Madrid’s center backs for 2026/27?

Looking ahead to next season, a squad set to be coached by José Mourinho currently features Rüdiger, Dean Huijsen and the injured Éder Militão as established center backs. There are lingering doubts about Raúl Asencio’s future, while David Alaba is set to depart when his contract expires, with no renewal on the table.

Militão’s injury troubles have only heightened the need to reinforce the position. On Sunday, this outlet reported on an approach from the camp of Manchester City defender Joško Gvardiol. The Croat appears open to a move amid an anticipated transition within the Premier League side, and he could emerge as a serious option for Madrid, who have so far limited themselves to listening to the proposal.
