With just 14 days left before the 2026 World Cup kicks off, Mexico’s iconic Estadio Neza 86 has launched a major restoration effort aimed at reviving its old magic and reclaiming its place as one of the country’s most beloved soccer landmarks.
A World Cup relic gets a second life
Located in Nezahualcóyotl, the stadium was one of the official venues for the 1986 World Cup and remains a cherished part of Mexico’s soccer history. Now, nearly four decades later, local officials are determined to preserve that legacy.
The renovation project is being led by the municipal government under Mayor Adolfo Cerqueda, who shared photos of the work on social media.
After 12 years of abandonment, the stadium is finally receiving long‑overdue repairs — from the stands to the pitch to structural elements damaged during Mexico’s 2017 earthquake.
The 1986 World Cup matches that put Neza 86 on the map
During the Mexico ’86 tournament, Neza 86 hosted three Group E matches:
- Scotland 0–1 Denmark
- Denmark 6–1 Uruguay
- Uruguay 0–0 Scotland
A stadium still showing its scars
Reporters from AS recently visited the site and confirmed that while progress is visible, the stadium still bears the marks of time and neglect. Restoration crews continue working to stabilize and modernize the facility.
