A clean sheet, a 2-0 win and another notch in the personal records ranking. Saturday’s 2-0 against Ghana will have tasted sweet for veteran goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa as he is now tied with Rafael Márquez as the third most capped Mexican player of all time with El Tri and is certain to soon improve on this milestone.

The current Salernitana stopper made his 146th appearance for El Tri in the win over the Black Stars. Ochoa made his Mexico debut in December 2005 as the national side faced Hungary and has made appearances at five World Cups for Mexico: Germany 2006, South Africa 2010, Brazil 2014, Russia 2018 and most recently at Qatar 2022.

Guardado leads the way

Ahead of Marquez in the most caps for Mexico podium is ‘Emperador’ Claudio Suárez who pulled on the famous green hersey 177 times with Real Betis midfielder Andres Guardado leading the way on playing for El Tri 179 times.

Ochoa is still considered as Mexico number one keeper and has no plans to hang up the gloves just yet with his sights firmly set on the 2026 World Cup that will be co-hosted by Canada, USA and Mexico.

At 38 years of age, Ochoa currently has no plans to retire and will be inspired by the likes José de Jesús Corona , who at 42 years old, remains active and today plays for Liga MX side Xolos de Tijuana.
