The departure of Guillermo Ochoa from Club América has left the goalkeeper position vacant ahead of the start of the Clausura 2023 tournament. This opened the door for Óscar Jiménez to become the No. 1 option and extend his stay with Las Águilas. However, América signed Luis Ángel Malagón during the winter transfer window to be Ochoa’s replacement and this looked to be forcing Jiménez to look elsewhere for minutes.

Óscar Jiménez was negotiating with Xolos de Tijuana, but the departure of Guillermo Ochoa stopped everything. Even though Club América signed Malagón, the head coach Fernando Ortíz decided to name Jiménez as the starting goalkeeper during the tournament that will begin on January 7 at Estadio Azteca against Querétaro.

Second opportunity as a starter for Jiménez

Jiménez played the majority of games during the Copa Sky tournament and this will be the second time he is named as the starter in Liga MX. The first time it was during the Apertura 2016 tournament when he played with Jaguares de Chiapas and in his debut Jiménez conceded two goals in the 2-0 defeat against América.

The 34-year-old played a total of 10 games in that tournament, conceded 16 goals and only kept two clean sheets. Óscar Jiménez will received a second opportunity as a starter in goal with the team with the most league titles, he knows only too well that a couple of bad performances could force Fernando Ortíz to start Luis Ángel Malagón.
