Manchester City’s disastrous 2024/25 season continues to go from bad to worse after they suffered a 5-1 thrashing at the hands of Arsenal in the Premier League on Sunday, which leaves them 15 points behind leaders Liverpool.

After falling behind to Martin Odegaard’s early goal, City briefly momentarily through Erling Haaland 10 minutes into the second half. However, Thomas Partey immediately restored The Gunners’ lead and three strikes in the final half an hour from Myles Lewis-Skelly, Kai Havertz and Ethan Nwaneri ensured a heavy defeat for the reigning Premier League champions.

Manchester City’s heavy defeats in 2024/25

With his team conceding five goals, Pep Guardiola has suffered a new career low, not for the first time this season. City have now let in four goals or more in four separate games in 2024/25, the most in a single season in Guardiola’s managerial career with Barcelona, Bayern Munich and his current club, as highlighted by Opta.

The Sky Blues lost 4-1 away to Sporting CP in the league phase of the Champions League on November 5, then conceded four times without reply in a home defeat to Tottenham Hotspur 18 days later.

A 4-2 reverse at the hands of Paris Saint-Germain on January 22 then briefly threatened to eliminate them from the Champions League before the knockout stage.

Champions League playoffs draw brings more bad news for Guardiola

Guardiola’s team did eventually do enough to sneak into the UCL knockout phase playoffs, although that could also bring them more bad news. They have been drawn to face Champions League holders Real Madrid, who will be desperate to heap further misery on the former Barcelona coach.

City have now lost seven league games in 2024/25, two short of Guardiola’s worst ever tally over a full season. In 2019/20, the Mancunians were defeated nine times, which is comfortably the Spanish coach’s poorest record.
