Real Madrid’s Champions League runand essentially their entire season — came to an end on Wednesday. With LaLiga practically out of reach, the loss in Munich closed the door on their last major title hope.

Despite fighting until the final whistle, Álvaro Arbeloa’s men couldn’t overcome Bayern, and now the club enters a period of serious reflection. Several former players weighed in on what went wrong.

Emmanuel Petit didn’t hold back, arguing that Madrid needs a roster overhaul if they want to win again: “There are players who simply aren’t at Real Madrid level. They need changes if they want to win games like this.”

Camavinga needs to be smarter

Thierry Henry addressed the controversy surrounding the officiating: “Madrid fans are going to flood social media complaining about the referee. They’ll say Camavinga’s second yellow was a disgrace, too soft for a Champions League quarterfinal, and that the officials were biased. But here’s the thing: when you’re playing on the road at the Allianz Arena, you don’t give the referee any reason to make a decision. You have to be smarter than that.”

Henry also highlighted how wild the match was: “What a game.. You watch Madrid completely tear them apart in the first half with Güler and Mbappé, and everyone at home thinks the comeback is already done. Then Bayern comes out after halftime, takes advantage of the extra man, and turns the field into a washing machine. They suffocated them. And that Michael Olise strike in added time to make it 5–? and bury the tie? What a goal. Showing that kind of ice-cold composure against Real Madrid in the 94th minute is special. Madrid thought they were the kings of the comeback, but tonight Bayern gave them a brutal taste of their own medicine.”

Daniel Riolo praised Madrid’s performance despite the elimination: “Real played an amazing match. It wasn’t a perfect game plan, but they got the kind of game they wanted. They weren’t that far from pulling off the heist.”

Unfair to point the finger at Arbeloa

Steven Gerrard and Steve McManaman defended Arbeloa, even though they believe he may lose his job: “He’ll probably get fired, but I don’t think he deserves it.”

Former Madrid star Wesley Sneijder was harshest of all, blasting Camavinga for picking up a needless red card: “Camavinga was stupid. You know what the Madrid players should’ve done after the final whistle? They should’ve sprinted to the locker room and let him know exactly how angry they were. I don’t think he should go to the World Cup.”
