Manchester City midfielder Phil Foden had to leave England duty this weekend and was sent for an emergency operation for apendicitis, the England National Team revealed. The 22-year-old had his appendix removed and and he will be unavailable for England’s Euro 2024 qualifier against Ukraine.

England boss Gareth Southgate has decided not to call up anyone his place, preferring to use the squad he already has for the clash. Foden is not the only high profile player to drop out of the squad: Reece James left the camp after being unable to shake off an “ongoing issue”.

England won their first game of the international break, beating Italy 1-2 in Naples; Declan Rice and Harry Kane - who became England’s top goal scorer - were on the scoresheet.

How long will Foden be out for?

Foden will now be forced to recover and miss Manchester City’s Premier League tie with Liverpool on Saturday. It is not known how long his recovery process will take.

A club statement said that “Phil will now return to Manchester to begin rehabilitation. He will not be fit for this weekend’s Premier League game at home to Liverpool and it is unclear at this stage how long he will be unavailable for.”

Will he be fit to face Bayern?

The player, who has 13 goals and 6 assists this season, may not be back for the game against Southampton (8 April) and will presumably also miss the first leg of the UEFA Champions League quarter-final tie against Bayern (11 April). The return leg of the fixture is the following week.
